Xi’s new swindle: Human rights with Chinese characteristics

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made it clear that his government has no inclination to behave in a civilized manner. His statement that “there is no universal path to human rights development in the world” (Xinhua) proves that truth for the nth time.

So now we have ‘human rights with Chinese characteristics’! The idea is actually the negation of all human rights, for the Chinese Communist Party wants to play God—even literally. Almost, as we shall see.

In the Judaic-Christian tradition, God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. So, the Chinese state, in accordance with the CCP’s beliefs, is all-powerful vis-à-vis the citizens, who don’t enjoy any ‘universal’ human rights, the rights like free speech, habeas corpus, and religious freedom. Even the right to life is absent. Nobody can speak their mind without risk, and anybody can disappear forever without trace.

The Chinese state is also omniscient, knowing everything about everybody by deploying the most advanced innovations like face-recognition technology and Artificial Intelligence. Which also make it omnipresent: state security personnel can arrest anybody from anywhere.

Unlike the God of Abrahamic faiths, however, the Chinese state doesn’t love—not even its own citizens. It killed tens of millions when Mao ruled. It still kills, imprisons, tortures, and persecutes viciously those who have the courage to assert their human rights.

And under Xi, the state and the CCP are increasingly becoming crueler, brasher, and stronger. This becomes evident from the fact he made the remarks repudiating human rights in his interaction with European leaders. He was “co-hosting a China-Germany-EU leaders’ meeting in Beijing via video link with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen,” Xinhua reported.

Xi knows that Western and other democratic nations have been opposing the gross violations of human rights and international norms by Beijing. But he doesn’t care a hoot. Unsurprising, they are getting alienated from it.

Germany, which has strong economic ties with the dragon nation, is the latest to express its exasperation with the CCP’s thuggish behavior.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on September 2, “We want to help shape [the future global order] so that it is based on rules and international cooperation, not on the law of the strong. That is why we have intensified cooperation with those countries that share our democratic and liberal values.”

It is a noble thought which is shared by all democratic countries, including India. It is time the Narendra Modi government joined hands with other liberal democracies and checked Chinese aggression and barbarity..
