World steps into New Year with hope and prayers on its lips

The world began its New Year 2021 celebrations on a note of hope and optimism. Many celebrations were muted but not all. New Zealand, Australia and Japan are the first ones to celebrate. We take a look at their celebrations and move across the world.

Pandemic curbs have ensured that the celebrations for New Year 2021 have been lowkey in one of the most celebratory societies, Australia.

Japan had a muted New Year 2021 celebration due to snowfall and the fear of coronavirus.

The UK, reeling under a severe coronavirus load had imposed strict social distancing norms. Londoners ushered in a subdued 2021. Mayor Sadiq Khan wished the people and uploaded an image of fireworks thanking the National Health Service and other British icons.

USA, one of the worst affected countries rings in New Year 2021 with Jennifer Lopez's performance at New York's iconic Times Square. She performed before a small select audience even as New York plans to vaccinate one million people in a dazzling city which is now cowering under the scare of coronavirus.
