US warns citizens to steer clear of Kabul airport as terror risk stays high

The United States issued another alert to its citizens on Saturday asking them to "immediately" leave the gates around the Kabul airport, where the suicide bombing took place on Thursday.

"US citizens who are at the Abbey gate, East gate, North gate or the New Ministry of Interior gate now should leave immediately," the US Embassy in Kabul said in a security alert.

"Because of security threats at the Kabul airport, we continue to advise US citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates," the statement added.

The alert comes even as the US hit back at the terror group with a drone strike in Afghanistan to kill one of their main plotters of the Kabul airport bombing.

As many as 1,000 Americans and many more Afghans are still struggling to get out of Afghanistan as the Biden administration remains committed to its Aug. 31 deadline

After the Kabul airport blast, Geneneral Kenneth McKenzie, the head of US Central Command had warned that the threat of more terror attacks is “extremely real.”

“We expect those attacks to continue, and we’re doing everything we can to prepare for those attacks.”

McKenzie said the United States was prepared to use attack aircraft , including AC-130 gunships to defend the airport if necessary. "We'll be prepared to do that, should it become necessary to defend the base," he said.
