The United States has strongly criticized the recent remarks made by Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Israel's strikes in Gaza, calling them "anti-Semitic".

Erdogan, the self-proclaimed 'Sultan' of the fictitious neo-Ottoman empire, had spoken in favour of the Palestinians and slammed US President Joe Biden's deal to sell weapons to Israel.

"You are writing history with your bloody hands in this incident that is a serious disproportionate attack on Gaza, which is leading to the martyrdom of hundreds of thousands of people," he had said.

The US said that it strongly condemns President Erdogan’s recent anti-Semitic comments regarding the Jewish people and finds them reprehensible.

"We urge President Erdogan and other Turkish leaders to refrain from incendiary remarks, which could incite further violence. We call on Turkey to join the United States in working to end the conflict," the US State Department said in a statement Tuesday night.

"Anti-Semitic language has no place anywhere. The United States is deeply committed to combatting anti-Semitism in all of its forms. We take seriously the violence that often accompanies anti-Semitism and the dangerous lies that undergird it. We must always counter lies with facts and answer crimes of hate with justice," it added.

The latest episode will further dent the strained relations between the two NATO allies even though both Biden and Erdogan had in a phone call last month agreed to increase the cooperation between Washington and Ankara.

Biden and Erdogan had also agreed to meet on the sidelines of a NATO summit in June.
