UK raises terror threat level to severe after bomb blast at Liverpool hospital

The UK government has raised the country’s nationwide terrorist threat level to severe on Monday after a suicide bomber killed himself when he detonated an explosive device in the back of a taxi at the Liverpool maternity hospital a day earlier.

The bomber has been identified as Enzo Almeni who was born Emad Jamil Al-Swealmeen and raised in Iraq before moving to the UK several years ago. He converted to Christianity in 2015. Some of his accomplices have also been arrested.

CCTV video clips put on social media platforms show that the driver of the taxi had a miraculous escape as he got out a split second before the explosion and was lucky to get away with minor injuries.

“It does look as though the taxi driver in question did behave with incredible presence of mind and bravery,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the media. He said that the investigation is ongoing and said it was premature to share further details.

The blast occurred around 11 a.m. on Remembrance Sunday, a day to honor Britain’s war dead, outside the Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

The Mayor of Liverpool, Joanne Anderson told Daily Mail “the taxi driver, in his heroic efforts, has managed to divert what could have been an absolutely awful disaster at the hospital”, adding that he had “locked the doors” to keep the bomber in the back.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the bomber wanted to go to the nearby cathedral where a Remembrance Sunday service was being held and more than 1,200 military personnel, veterans and families of the fallen had gathered but found the streets were blocked.

“First of all, the incident has been declared as a terrorist incident. The police have now declared that. Secondly, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (Jtac) are now increasing the United Kingdom’s threat level from substantial to severe, and that is because what we saw yesterday is the second incident in a month,” the home secretary, Priti Patel told the media on Monday referring to the attack on the British MP David Amess last month. He was stabbed to death.
