Customs officials seized 12.9 kg of heroin worth Rs 90 crore from two Ugandan women who arrived at Delhi International Airport in the wee hours on Saturday, officials said.

Both the Ugandan nationals had arrived from Nairobi in Kenya via Abu Dhabi.

The contraband went undetected at several airports in Uganda and Kenya before being intercepted at the Delhi airport. The seized heroin was concealed in the false bottom of their check-in baggage, officials added.

The dog squad at the airport detected that there were drugs in the three suitcases that they were carrying. Further investigations revealed that the suitcases had false bottoms in which the heroin was concealed.

The heroin was vacuum packed in plastic and paper bags.

During the interrogation, one of the female passengers revealed that she had been introduced to a Kenyan national who had promised her money in exchange for the delivery of specific goods in Delhi. As a result of this invitation, the lady passenger travelled by road from Kampala in Uganda to Nairobi, where the Kenyan handed over a bag to be delivered in Delhi, as well as tickets and certain documents to cover her visit as a medical tourist.

The woman was supposed to deliver the goods to a person who would contact her after she came out of the airport.

The second lady passenger allegedly revealed during questioning that she was sent by her sister by road from Kampala to Nairobi and then to Delhi via Abu Dhabi. She was also in possession of certain documents to pass her off as a medical tourist.
