Taiwan receives world’s most advanced tanks from US amid increasing tensions with China

Taiwan has received 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks from the United States, marking the first US tank delivery to the island in 23 years, Radio Free Asia reported.

According to Radio Free Asia, this shipment is part of a larger order of 122 tanks expected over the next two years. While the M1A2T is regarded as one of the most advanced main battle tanks globally, some experts have raised concerns about its suitability for Taiwan’s mountainous terrain and dense urban areas. However, the tanks are seen as a major boost to Taiwan’s defence capabilities, especially considering the ongoing tension with China.

The M1A2T Abrams, an advanced version of the M1 Abrams produced by General Dynamics, is equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun capable of penetrating armour up to 850mm thick. Its formidable firepower, enhanced armour, and speed make it a powerful asset for Taiwan’s military.

Compared to Taiwan’s current fleet of M60A3 and CM11 tanks–both of which are over 30 years old–the M1A2T represents a significant technological leap. In addition, the Abrams features a “hunter-killer” capability, allowing it to track and engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Eric Gomez, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, emphasized that the primary role of the M1A2T in Taiwan’s defence would be to protect critical landing points during a potential Chinese invasion. While China’s amphibious forces may deploy light armoured vehicles, Gomez pointed out that these would not be supported by main battle tanks, positioning the M1A2T as a key deterrent.

Despite concerns about the tank’s performance in Taiwan’s challenging terrain, experts agree that the M1A2T significantly enhances Taiwan’s ability to withstand Chinese military pressure. The arrival of the tanks comes amid rising tensions with China, which has repeatedly opposed U.S.-Taiwan military cooperation and insists on its territorial claim over the island.

Meanwhile, when asked about the deal, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated,” The Taiwan authorities’ attempts to achieve independence through military reliance on external forces are doomed to fail. China will resolutely defend its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.”
