Russian air strike kills top terrorist in Syria

<p>
A Russian air strike has killed a wanted terrorist in Syria, who had been active in Chechnya and has been accused of masterminding several terror hits.</p>
<p>
Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) eliminated Murad Margoshvili, a commander of the Junud al-Sham terrorist group , Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev told journalists last month.</p>
<p>
"Very recently the Russian Aerospace Forces managed to eliminate one of the leaders of the Junud al-Sham group Murad Margoshvili. This is an odious individual who fought in Chechnya, with the blood of many civilians on his hands," he said according to Tass news agency of Russia.</p>
<p>
Margoshvili was also called Muslim Abu Walid al Shishani.</p>
<p>
According to a UN Security Council document,  Murad Iraklievich Margoshvili was the leader of a group of militants, controlled by Doku Khamatovich Umarov in the mid-2000s, and was involved in the preparation and conduct of terrorist attacks on the territory of the Republic of Ingushetia (Russia).</p>
<p>
Between 2012-15, he was one of the leaders of a terrorist group operating in Syria, which cooperated with Jabhat al-Nusrah, listed as Al-Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant.  Since the end of 2015 Margoshvili has been heading a terrorist group that has conducted attacks on the civilian population of Syria and infrastructure facilities.</p>
<p>
Margoshvili was known to have actively interacted with the leadership of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, listed as Al-Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, maintaining at the same time contacts with the leaders of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). He saw himself as a representative of Emarat Kavkaz in Syria, and had actively contacted members of Emarat Kavkaz located on the territory of Russia and Turkey.</p>

According to the envoy, there would be no let up in Russia’s anti-terror work in Syria. "Only under the conditions that every target being hit is checked several times for absolute reliability. Accusations voiced that the Russian side hit a school are not true," he observed.</p>
<p>
The Russian Supreme Court declared Junud al-Sham a terror organisation in June 2006.</p>
