Russia to display first electric motor aircraft at MAKS air show

Russia will display its first aircraft with an electric motor at the MAKS International Air and Space Salon on July 20-25 at Zhukovsky, near Moscow. The electric motor is part of the hybrid powertrain demonstrator that Russia’s Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) is developing.

The biennial aviation show will be held at the Zhukovsky International Airport on the outskirts of Moscow. Russian website RT quoted Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov as saying: "This is what was done with the Fund of Advanced Studies – an electric airplane based on superconductivity principles.”

Trials of the superconductive aircraft electric motor started on February 5 for which a special flying laboratory has been created on the basis of the Yak-40 aircraft. It is believed that the new technology will be used to create engines and electric power complexes for all-electric aircraft and helicopters.

CIAM CEO Mikhail Gordin, highlighted the project as one of the important projects in modern aviation which will solve many technological issues currently facing air transport.

Andrey Vavilov, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Superox, said that Russian scientists are the first in the world to test an electric aircraft engine on the high-temperature superconducting platform, HTSP. He said: “ …we have hundreds of manufactured windings prototypes and about ten manufactured and tested engine samples of different capacities.”
Website National Interest reports that the Russian aircraft industry was also working on a light, next-generation fighter to complement the Su-57 and upcoming MiG-41 stealth interceptors. The MAKS international air show will showcase a wide range of products by the Russian aircraft industry.
