Royal Shakeup: Prince William may be the first person to abdicate throne after Queen’s reign

The first child of Prince Charles and Diana, Prince William has been designated second in the succession to the British throne. Prince William’s 73 year old father Prince Charles is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II who is 95.

There has been a rumour, that after the death of her husband, the Queen may “retire’ abdicating the throne for Prince Charles. But the speculation died down when royal historians clarified that unlike other monarchs in Europe, there’s no such tradition of “abdication” in the United Kingdom. In fact, abdication has been said to go against informal rules of the monarchy’s set-up. Indeed, it was considered a constitutional crisis when Prince Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson.

On her 21st birthday, Queen Elizabeth II promised England that she’d be their Queen for life.

British Royal expert Ian Lloyd says that given the queen’s promise to the royal family and her famous oath, she is unlikely to abdicate the throne for Prince Charles. And after her reign, Prince Charles will likely "want to have a bit of time as King" reports the express.co.uk quoting the author of “The Duke: 100 Chapters of the Life of Prince Philip”, Ian Lloyd.

Unlike his mother, who unexpectedly became queen at just 25, when her father, King George VI, died suddenly, 73 year-old Prince Charles has spent his entire life in preparation to wear the crown. He’s the longest waiting heir apparent and will be the oldest British monarch to ever take the throne – and it’s still uncertain when that will happen.

“Most other monarchies in Europe have abdicated. For example, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands Silk and Albert II, the king of Belgium retired. The abdication and retirement of monarchs are commonplace in Europe,” said Royal expert Lloyd.

There is a churning inside the firm, a term used for the British royal family that there should be a “retirement” age for future kings and queens, and Prince William “likes” the idea.

Lloyd says Prince William may become the first member of the British royal family to abdicate this century. Experts believe that the end of the Queen’s rule will bring many changes to the firm.

The author explains that future generations of British kings and queens may follow the example of the European monarchy and retire when they reach an age that may prevent them from fully performing their duties, instead of being monarchs for life.

He continued: “Prince Charles will never do this. He may have been 80 years old when he came to the throne. I think he would want to have some time as a king”.

“I think in the future Prince William may become the first British monarch to abdicate after reaching a certain age in this century, because it is best to have a king or queen who will be on the throne at the age of 40 and retired in his 70s. When you are healthy, you can travel the world on behalf of the country,” explained the author.

“The queen once revealed to her late cousin Margaret Rhodes that if she had a stroke or developed Alzheimer’s, she could give up the throne”, said Sarah Bradford, author of Queen Elizabeth II : her life in our times.

Given the enormous social change that has been going on since the current Queen assumed the throne 70 years ago, it might seem surprising that a system of inherited privilege and power should have retained its popularity. But the Harry and Meghan mutiny, with its full HD Hollywood gloss, has pulled some punches. The couple blamed the grubby racism, the crushing conformity and the systemic unkindness they faced in Buckingham Palace on “the firm,” “the institution'', and the “monster machine” — careful to keep the “family” blemish-free.
