Rishi Sunak to become UK Prime Minister, creates history

Former chancellor and main contender for the UK prime ministerial race, Rishi Sunak is set to become Prime Minister as former defence secretary Penny Mordaunt drops out of the leadership race.

Sunak will be the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of Britain.

A large number of Conservative Party MPs have voiced their support for Sunak in a bid to cement the party and keep the Labour Party at bay. The party has repeatedly asked for re-elections which the Conservatives do not want at this stage.

With debilitating infighting among the Conservatives, the UK went through months of political instability. Sunak is now expected to tackle the “cost of living crisis” and the looming energy crisis. His earlier rival and short-time prime minister Liz Truss was accused of damaging the British economy during her 45-day stint.

Sunak will also have the added responsibility of unifying the fractious party and taking it to the 2024 polls in the pink of health.
