Rare ground-to-sky lightning strike caught on camera

A rare upward lightning strike during a thunderstorm that hit Kansas in the USA has been caught on camera in slow motion.  </p>

In the video, the bolt appears to begin at the ground and then travels towards the cloud, which is quite the opposite to what happens in normal lightning strikes.</p>
<p>
The video was shot by Kansas resident Taylor Vonfeldt, who called it the "most insane strike of lightning" he had ever caught on camera. </p>
<p>
The New York Post cited a meteorologist as saying that the phenomenon occurs when a strong electric field passes over a tall object like a skyscraper or radio tower.</p>
<p>
 "Upward leaders are initiated off the tower as a result. They connect with the electric field in the cloud and you get lightning," said Meteorologist Chris Vagasky.</p>
<p>
Tornado warnings have been issued in several counties in Kansas. Winds were gusting up to 50-60 km in the area and there were power outages as well on Tuesday night.</p>
