Nepal deports French serial killer Charles Sobhraj

Nepal deported notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj to his home country France, on Friday.  The development comes hours after Sobhraj was freed from a Kathmandu-based prison.

Authorities said that Sobhraj will be barred from entering Nepal for the next 10 years.

“He has been barred from entering Nepal for the next ten years,” Fanindra Mani Pokharel, an official spokesperson for Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, told India Narrative on Friday evening.

The immigration authorities of Nepal completed all the legal procedures for his deportation today itself.

Sobhraj will reach Paris on Saturday via Qatar on a Qatar Airways flight.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Nepal had ordered the release of Sobhraj on the ground of his age. A division bench of justices Sapana Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha had asked the government to arrange for his repatriation to France. The justices concluded that the 78-year-old should be released as he has already finished 95 percent of his jail term.

The notorious French serial killer served 19 years in jail for killing two American nationals in Nepal in 2003.

Charles, currently 78 years old, is a Frenchman of Indian and Vietnamese parentage.

He was charged with using a fake passport to enter Nepal and killing two backpackers in 1975, US national Connie Jo Boronzich, 29, and his girlfriend Canadian Laurent Carrière, 26.

Charles, better known as ‘bikini killer’, was spotted outside a casino in Nepal on September 1, 2003 after a broadsheet daily published his photograph.

Following his arrest, the Nepal police had registered two separate cases against him on charges of murdering the couple in 1975 in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur.
