Kenyans lash out at fast food chain KFC for refusing to use locally produced potatoes

Disruption in global supply chain has hit fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Due to delays in supplies, the popular American chain has been unable to serve French fries to its customers. While the popular American chain has offered alternatives to its customers, the issue has raked up a controversy on Kenyan social media with several citizens threating to boycott KFC.

"You love our chips a little too much, and we've run out. Sorry!" KFC’s Twitter handle said earlier week.

"It has to do with delays in shipping lines due to the Covid situation," regional boss Jacques Theunissen told local news outlet Business Daily.

KFC, which operates locally through franchisee Kuku Foods East Africa, does not source potatoes locally on global quality standards, the Cable said.

Many citizens insisted that the company should be using locally produced potatoes. One of the Twitter users said, “If you are a true Kenyan, you should not eat chips prepared by KFC! Eat chips elsewhere.”

“That story about potato standards in Kenya is pure nonsense whichever way you look at it,” another Twitter user in Kenya said.

“The reason we cannot buy local at the moment is all suppliers need to go through the global QA approval process, and we cannot bypass that even if we run out to ensure that our food is safe for consumption by our customers,” the news organization quoted Theunissen as saying.
