This is the second time that there has been an attack on the gurudwara in about a month. On June 18 this year, two people were killed and three injured after gunmen opened fire on the gurudwara where 25-30 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus had gathered.

The attack, believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), had damaged the Karte Parwan gurudwara considerably. The Karte Parwan is believed to be the biggest gurudwara in Afghanistan.

Just last week the Taliban government had assured a delegation of Sikhs and Hindus that they could return back as the security situation had improved in the country.

In March 2020, a major attack had taken place on Gurdwara Har Rai Sahib in Kabul in which nearly 25 Sikhs were killed. There has been an exodus of Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan with their numbers now falling to barely a few dozen.

Minorities have been under attack in the conflict-torn country where the situation has deteriorated after the Taliban overthrew the democratically-elected government of Ashraf Ghani in August 2021 following the withdrawal of the US and NATO troops.
