Indian official slams Erdogan's Kashmir remarks at the UN

India’s permanent representative to the UN, T.S. Tirumurti slammed Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today for his remarks on Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) made before the UN General Assembly.

Tirumurti tweeted: “We have seen remarks by President of Turkey on Indian UT of Jammu & Kashmir. They constitute gross interference in India’s internal affairs and are completely unacceptable. Turkey should learn to respect sovereignty of other nations and reflect on its own policies more deeply.”

Erdogan had, in his pre-recorded video statement at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, brought up Kashmir by calling it a “burning issue”. He said: "The Kashmir conflict, which is also key to the stability and peace of South Asia is still a burning issue."

Erdogan, who is also vying for the leadership of Islamic nations, added: "We are in favor of solving this issue through dialogue within the framework of the United Nations resolutions, especially in line with the expectations of the people of Kashmir."

The Security Council directive on Kashmir, Resolution 47, calls upon Pakistan to remove its troops and personnel from the disputed region as the first step and as a pre-condition for a referendum. However, Islamabad has rejected it and has continued its occupation of large parts of Kashmir. It wants a referendum but does not want to comply with UN resolutions for holding it.

Last year too, Erdogan and Mahathir Mohammed, the then-Prime Minister of Malaysia, had joined Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to raise the issue at the General Assembly. Many geo-political experts say that both the leaders are vying for the leadership of Islamic nations by raising the Kashmir issue.

While Erdogan condemned terrorism in other parts of the world, Erdogan was silent on the terrorism directed against India. Erdogan has also been criticised for keeping quiet on the human rights violations of the Uighur Muslims by China even as it talks about the Muslim community worldwide..
