India takes a lead role in countering terrorism worldwide

T S Tirumurti, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, took over as the new head of the the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee for 2022 in New York earlier today.

India will chair the committee, which was established by the UN Security Council on 28 September 2001 in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks carried out in the United States, for one year.

The committee consists of all 15 members of the Security Council and is tasked with monitoring implementation of a number of measures by the states to enhance their legal, institutional and operational abilities to counter terrorist activities at home, in their regions, and around the world.

Since 2001, the Council has taken the leading role in guiding the evolution of the approaches required to address the threat of terrorism.

Last week, India had welcomed the draft resolution to renew the mandate of Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), the expert body that supports the United Nations counter-terrorism architecture, until 31 December 2025.

"India is committed to pursue all necessary measures in collaboration with other member States towards the goal of zero tolerance for terrorism. As the Chair of CTC for 2022, India will make determined efforts to further enhance the role of CTC in strengthening the multilateral response to counter terrorism, and more importantly, ensuring that global response to the threat of terrorism remains unambiguous, undivided and effective," the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations had said in a statement last Thursday.
