India slams speculative reports on sending troops to Sri Lanka, lends unprecedented support of over US$ 3.8 billion in 2022

<strong>The High Commission of India in Colombo has categorically denied "speculative reports" in sections of media and social media about India sending its troops to Sri Lanka amid the ongoing crisis in the island nation.</strong></p>

In a statement on Monday, the Indian HC said that these reports and such views are also "not in keeping with the position" of the government of India. </p>
<p>
It quoted the Ministry of External Affairs of India's stance which stated that India stands with the people of Sri Lanka as they seek to realize their aspirations for prosperity and progress through democratic means and values, established institutions and constitutional framework.</p>
<p>
Addressing media queries on the situation in Sri Lanka, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said that New Delhi continues to follow closely the recent developments in the neighbouring nation with which it shares deep civilizational bonds.</p>

"We are aware of the many challenges that Sri Lanka and its people have been facing, and we have stood with the Sri Lankan people as they have tried to overcome this difficult period, Bagchi had commented over the weekend.</p>

In pursuance of the central place that Sri Lanka occupies in its Neighbourhood First policy, India has extended this year itself an unprecedented support of over US$ 3.8 billion for ameliorating the serious economic situation in Sri Lanka.</p>

In Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had called the Lankan crisis a "serious matter" while emphasising that India continues to support the neighbour in a way which meets their requirements.</p>
<p>
"We had given Sri Lanka a line of credit, which has kept essential commodities flowing to them for the past several months," said Jaishankar.</p>
<p>
In the latest assistance, more than 44,000 MT of urea has been supplied to Colombo under a credit line extended by India, symbolising India's continued commitment to support the people of Sri Lanka, including farmers, and bolster the efforts for food security of the country's citizens.</p>
