India slams Pakistan for raising Kashmir at UN meet

India has yet again denounced Pakistan’s propaganda and Islamabad’s “desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods” after it made an unwarranted reference to Jammu and Kashmir during a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) debate on UN Security Council reforms, in New York earlier today.

Speaking in exercise of his right of reply, in response to Pakistan’s continued abuse of the Assembly through its unwarranted reference to Jammu and Kashmir, the representative of India said that irrespective of what Pakistan believes, both are an “integral and inalienable part” of India.

“Pakistan’s desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods and bad habit of abusing the sanctity of multilateral forums deserves collective contempt and perhaps some sympathy as well,” said Pratik Mathur, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN Headquarters.

As the UNGA opened its annual debate on Security Council reform, the speakers once again renewed their appeals for enlarging the 15-member organ and updating its working methods to make it more transparent, inclusive, representative, accountable and effective in a world gripped by a cascade of interlocking crisis.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj spoke on behalf of the Group of Four, which also comprises Brazil, Germany and Japan.

Kamboj said that representation is an inescapable precondition for legitimacy and effectiveness and the longer Security Council reform is stalled, the greater would be its deficiency in representation.

She voiced her regret over the lack of substantive work after four decades on equitable representation.

A single consolidated text with attribution is the best way to identify commonalities and promote a give-and-take, Kamboj stressed.
