India, Singapore and Thailand hold trilateral naval exercises in Andaman Sea

India's indigenously built battleship, INS Karmuk is participating in the third edition of the Singapore, India and Thailand Trilateral Maritime Exercise SITMEX being held in the Andaman Sea.

The two-day exercise from November 15-16 has been conducted annually since 2019 with the objective of enhancing inter-operability and imbibing best practices between the three navies.

Due to Covid-19, the exercise is being conducted as a ‘non-contact, at-sea only’ exercise. The drills will help the navies in strengthening coordination and cooperation in the maritime domain in the vital Indo-Pacific region.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the navies will engage in various tactical exercises including naval manoeuvres and surface warfare drills. The exercise will help in augmenting maritime security in the region.

With the Indo-Pacific region becoming hot, India has been organising and participating in multiple naval exercises with various countries and groupings.
