Showing zero tolerance towards Khalistani threats against Indian diplomats, India has summoned the Canadian High Commissioner in New Delhi over a poster released by pro-Khalistan outfits that threatens security of Indian diplomats.
Irked by the Canadian government’s tepid response towards anti-India activities launched by Khalistani separatists on its soil, India has decided to go ahead with some plain-speaking with authorities in Ottawa.
Khalistani radicals had earlier released posters holding Indian agencies and senior diplomats responsible for recent murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a move that has sparked international outrage. While the posters released in Canada name Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and Consul General of India in Toronto, the radicals have also targeted Indian High Commissioner to Australia Manpreet Vohra and Consul General of India in Melbourne Sushil Kumar. The Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Consul General TV Nagendra Prasad are also on the Khalistani radar.
Meanwhile, in a damage control exercise Canada, on its part, called the “promotional material” circulating ahead of the ‘Khalistan Freedom Rally’ “unacceptable,” and added that it takes its “obligations regarding safety of diplomats very seriously.”
In a statement on Tuesday, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly said, “Canada takes its obligations under the Vienna Conventions regarding the safety of diplomats very seriously. Canada remains in close contact with Indian officials considering some of the promotional material circulating online regarding a protest planned for July 8th, which are unacceptable.”
