India shifts embassy to Poland as fighting spreads to western Ukraine

The Indian embassy in Ukraine has been temporarily relocated to neighbouring Poland amid the "deteriorating security situation" in the war-torn country as the Russian military operation entered the 17th day.</p>

"In view of the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Ukraine, including attacks in the western parts of the country, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine will be temporarily relocated to Poland," the Ministry of External Affairs said.</p>

"The situation will be reassessed in the light of further developments," it said in a brief statement.</p>

The development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review India's security preparedness, and ongoing conflict in Ukraine.</p>
<p>
PM Modi was briefed on the latest developments in Ukraine, including the details of Operation Ganga  – mission launched to evacuate Indian citizens from Ukraine – the government said in a statement.</p>

Meanwhile, Russia stepped up attacks in the western parts of Ukraine and bombed an ammunition. Ukraine says up to 30 Russian missiles were fired at a military base, near the border of Nato member Poland. Officials say at least 35 people were killed and 134 injured in the attack on the Yavoriv base. The facility is used for training with Nato instructors</p>
<p>
The airport near the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk has also been hit.</p>
