India says Nepal’s developments are internal matter

India has described the developments in Nepal as its internal internal matter as Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s moved to dissolve the House of Representatives just two days after the opposition parties filed a joint petition.

Following Oli’s move, President Bidya Devi Bhandari announced mid term general elections for November 12 and 19, the Kathmandu Post noted. Currently, the country is also in the grip of a severe Covid 19 pandemic wave.

"We have taken note of the recent political developments in Nepal. We view these as internal matters of Nepal to be dealt by them under their own domestic framework and democratic processes,” the ministry of external affairs said on Wednesday.

It further added that “as a neighbour and friend, India remains unwavering in its support for Nepal and its people on their journey toward progress, peace, stability and development.”

India’s relations with Nepal has run into an uncertain terrain since Oli took charge. Kathmandu has also moved closer to China in the last couple of years.

“This is the second time the House was dissolved in five months. On December 20 last year, Oli had suddenly dissolved the House and called for snap polls for April 30 and May 10, throwing the country into political uncertainties,” Kathmandu Post said. The Supreme Court had however overturned his decision on February 23, calling it unconstitutional.
