India asks its citizens to leave Niger immediately

India on Friday asked its nationals “whose presence is not essential” to leave Niger “as soon as possible” in light of the prevailing situation in the West African nation following a military coup.

New Delhi said that it is closely monitoring the ongoing developments in Niger and the Indian nationals need to bear in mind that air space in the country is currently closed.

“When departing through a land border, utmost precautions may be taken to ensure safety and security,” said an advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

It added that those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes.

The government strongly advised all those Indian nationals who have not registered with the Indian Embassy in capital Niamey to do so expeditiously.

“Indian nationals can reach emergency contact in the Embassy of India, Niamey (+ 227 9975 9975) for any assistance,” the advisory detailed.

Niger President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a military coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the commander of the country’s presidential guard, on July 26.
