India and Japan discuss advancing high-speed railway project on UNGA sidelines

India and Japan agreed to strengthen cooperation, including steadily advancing the high-speed railway project – the flagship project between both countries – during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the new Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.

“Exchanged perspectives on our Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Discussed our regional, multilateral and global cooperation and taking them forward,” tweeted Jaishankar after the meeting.

According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Kamikawa stressed on further developing the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership besides also congratulating India on successfully holding the G20 New Delhi Summit.


The minister said that good cooperation has been achieved between the G7 and G20 chair countries Japan and India, and that they were able to translate the results of the G7 to the G20.

On the economic front, the two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation, including steadily advancing the high-speed railway project, which is the flagship project between Japan and India.

Exchanging views on regional situations such as the Indo-Pacific region and Security Council reforms, the two ministers also confirmed that it is important to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and that Japan and India will further strengthen their efforts to address various issues facing the international community.
