France and US praise PM Modi’s ‘now is the time for war to end’ statement on Ukraine

France and the United States have praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comment on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying that this is a message that every country should enforce on Moscow.

During the SCO Summit in Samarkand last week, PM Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that “today’s era isn’t of war” while reiterating India’s support for talks between Russia and Ukraine to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Speaking at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron praised PM Modi’s stance.

“Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India was right when he said the time is not for war. It is not for revenge against the West, or for opposing the West against the east. It is the time for a collective time for our sovereign equal states. To cope together with challenges we face,” said Macron.

The issue also came up for discussion when the French President met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the event.

“Thank President @EmmanuelMacron of France for hosting a high level cross-regional grouping today in New York. Discussions focused on the conflict in Ukraine and its implications for the Global South. Conversations also covered the salience of G-20 in these challenging times,” tweeted Jaishankar this morning.

The White House also took note of PM Modi’s statement on Ukraine.

“I think what Prime Minister Modi said — a statement of principle on behalf of what he believes is right and just — was very much welcomed by the United States and for the Indian leadership, which has longstanding relationships in Moscow, from the very top all the way through the Russian government, to continue to reinforce that message that now is the time for war to end,” commented US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
