Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin divorces husband of 3 years

Finland’s outgoing Prime Minister Sanna Marin has filed for divorce jointly with her husband of three years Markus Raikkonen, they announced on Instagram on Wednesday.

“We are grateful for the 19 years together and our beloved daughter. We will remain best friends,” they said in separate Instagram stories.

The couple have a 5-year-old daughter. They married in 2020 while Marin was Prime Minister and handling the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Raikkonen was working with a venture capital firm until recently.

“We have lived our youth together, entered adulthood together and grown into parents for our dear daughter together,” Marin wrote on Instagram after her August 2020 wedding to Raikkonen.

“We are still best friends, cool to each other and loving parents. We will continue to spend time together as a family and with each other,” she added.

Marin and Räikkönen, a businessman and former professional footballer, were married in 2020, according to Finland’s public broadcaster, YLE.

The announcement comes after Marin lost Finland’s parliamentary election in April, to the opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) in a tough contest.

Marin, 37, the world’s youngest prime minister when she took office in 2019, is considered by fans around the globe as a millennial role model for progressive new leaders.

She is currently serving as caretaker prime minister until a new coalition government can be formed.

She has faced criticism for her partying and her government’s high public expenditure.
