Fearing suicide bombings China recalls its Confucius Chinese teachers from Pakistan

After the killing of three Chinese teachers of the Confucius Institute of the University of Karachi, the Chinese teachers of the university have left the country. Other Chinese teaching in other cities across Pakistan too are ready to pack their bags and leave the country.

“The teachers at the different Confucius Institutes in the country, not just the University of Karachi, have been called back by China,” Dr Nasir Uddin, the head of the department in Karachi University told Geo TV.

As one of the biggest Confucius institutes in Pakistan, it has 30 Chinese teachers and two local teachers with more than 7,000 students registered.

Even the new Pakistani government headed by Shehbaz Sharif has assured Chinese authorities that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, China is wary of these claims.

Currently, there are five Confucius Institutes and two Confucius Classrooms across Pakistan. According to the Pakistani think-tank Pakistan-China Institute, there are more than 30,000 students studying in these institutions.

According to Geo TV, all Chinese instructors are directed to return to China immediately.

“We teachers have served as a faithful bridge between the two peoples, working hard to do our absolute best for them. Those who will suffer the most as a result of this attack are the Pakistani students and the opportunities available to them,” one Chinese teacher who did not want to identify himself told Pakistani journalist Aiza Azam.

The growing attacks on Chinese nationals working in Pakistan highlights security loopholes in Pakistan, especially after last month’s suicide attack followed by the warning by the Majeed Brigade- a suicide bomber unit of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The BLA said that China must quit Balochistan or face further retaliatory actions. The video shows a masked BLA commander speaking in English and addressing China’s President Xi Jinping directly.

“The Baloch Liberation Army guarantees you that CPEC will fail miserably on Baloch land … you still have time to quit Balochistan, or you will witness a retaliation from Baloch sons and daughters that you will never forget”.

For years, suicide bombings have been a tactic of militants in Pakistan, usually carried out by men or boys. The Baloch separatists said that this was the first suicide attack by a woman and warned of more.

The Chinese confidence in Pakistan’s security system’s ability to protect its citizens and projects had been seriously shaken after the Karachi University attack last month, when a female suicide bomber from the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA) attacked a van of the Confucius Institute at the prestigious University of Karachi on April 26, killing three Chinese teachers.

“The Pakistani government has promised to strengthen safety for Chinese nationals, projects and organisations. We will not allow any force to sabotage the great China-Pakistan friendship and cooperation. We believe Pakistan will take stronger measures to ensure smooth China-Pakistan cooperation,” China, with this statement, made it clear that for Pakistan to remain its ‘iron brother’ it has to remove terrorists inside Pakistan.
