This Sunday an explosion at the Eidgah mosque in Kabul had claimed the lives of 12 people. The explosion took place at a time when a memorial service was being held for the mother of Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, who had passed away a week earlier. The Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-KP) had claimed responsibility for the blast.

After taking over Kabul on August 15, the Taliban is facing challenges to its authority, notably from the IS-KP which has launched a number of attacks against the Taliban.

The main difference between the two organisations is that while the Taliban militants are focused on controlling Afghanistan, the IS-K aims at establishing a caliphate in South Asia. The Taliban was clear that it wanted to free Afghanistan from foreign occupation–an objective that has been met.

With different aims in mind, the two terror groups are now at loggerheads in the strife-torn country. The ISKP has a strong presence in the eastern province of Nangarhar, and has carried out a number of attacks in the provincial capital Jalalabad.

It had earlier carried out a deadly blast at the Kabul airport killing over 180 people including many US soldiers. With an increase in the frequency of bomb basts, the Taliban has begun to raid the hideouts of the IS-KP.
