Corona virus spreads wings, infects the powerful

The coronavirus pandemic does not discriminate. As it flies out of China to scathe newer destinations and countries, it is infecting the high and mighty in its wake.

UK Health Minister Nadine Dorries tested positive a few days back. People who had interacted with her, including Labour MP Rachael Maskell, have been asked to isolate themselves at home. With an increased number of cases, the British government and industry have stepped up efforts to combat the virus. The Bank of England has announced a cut in interest rates to shield the economy from the Covid-19 impact.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, too tested positive for coronavirus. She developed a mild fever on a trip to the UK after which doctors decided to test her for the virus. The entire family, including the Prime Minister and their three children, have self-isolated themselves at home. The Prime Minister is, however, working from home.

A diplomat working at the Philippines’ UN mission has tested positive for coronavirus. Even before her case became known, the UN headquarters had been temporarily closed down due to rising infections in New York. Public tours have been cancelled and visits to the building have been barred.

The Brazilian President’s communications secretary, Fabio Wajngarten, has been diagnosed with coronavirus. He had met US President Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence at Trump’s Florida resort, wearing a ‘Make Brazil great again’ cap. While Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is being monitored for Covid-19, Trump has declared that he does not plan to be tested for the virus. Scoffing away the threat, Trump told reporters: “Let’s put it this way: I’m not concerned.” The President is, however, not shaking hands with people he meets.

Beside the powerful, the virus has infected celebrities too. Hollywood stars, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson both tested positive for coronavirus while travelling in Australia. Hanks kept posting updates of their health situation on social media to keep their fans and well-wishers informed. Australia has been reeling under the virus’ onslaught with a large number of cases getting reported. Nine Network, where Wilson had appeared on a talk show is taking precautions regarding the spread of the virus among its staff.

The virus has spread to over 100 countries in all continents, causing panic and bringing down business. With no treatment discovered as yet, arresting its spread has become important..
