Concerns over food insecurity rise for many countries as Russia-Ukraine war rumbles

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns of food insecurity for many countries, especially the poorer economies. Several countries in Europe, Africa besides Central and Middle Eastern Europe are heavily dependent on wheat supplies from these two countries.

The wheat importing nations will be particularly vulnerable to a disruption in the production or transportation of grains and seeds from Russia and Ukraine.

The Wall Street Journal said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens a big portion of the world’s wheat supply and has sent prices on a dizzying ride to new highs as well as the sharpest weekly drop in years.

Supply side constraints have already led to higher food prices all over the world. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, food prices already touched a record high in February.

The sanctions against Russia have also led to disruptions in supply.

“For lower-income countries, disruption to supplies as well as higher prices could cause increased hunger and food insecurity,” a World Bank blog said.

Higher commodity prices including that of energy would also have an impact of the global economy, making post Covid 19 economic recovery a lot tougher and far more uncertain.

Oil prices have risen by more than 100 percent during the last 6 months, the blog read.
