China warns EU over arrested Bloomberg journalist

China has issued a warning to the European Union (EU) not to interfere in the arrest of Bloomberg journalist Hedge Fan, saying it was an "internal matter". Fan, a Chinese citizen, working for Bloomberg wire service was arrested on charges of endangering national security.

The EU has asked China to release all detained journalists, including Fan.

<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-55298328"><strong>The <em>BBC</em> reports</strong> </a>that the Chinese embassy in the EU said this Sunday that Fan was "suspected of engaging in criminal activities that endanger China's national security and was recently taken into compulsory measures by the Beijing State Security Bureau in accordance with the law".

China's Foreign Correspondent Club in China (FCCC) too has protested the journalist's arrest. Fan has been working for <em>Bloomberg</em> since 2017 and had earlier worked for <em>Reuters, CNBC, Al Jazeera</em> and <em>CBS</em> News.

New York-based <em>Bloomberg</em> said: "We are very concerned for her, and have been actively speaking to Chinese authorities to better understand the situation. We are continuing to do everything we can to support her while we seek more information."

Only two days back, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), had said that China, which has arrested several journalists for covering the coronavirus pandemic, is the world’s worst jailer for the second year consecutively. The CPJ says China has jailed 47 journalists, many of who are serving long sentences or are in the Xinjiang region without any charges levelled against them.
