Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has survived an assassination attempt after a gunman fired at a container where Khan and other members of his party were travelling atop a container at Wazirabad in Punjab during a protest march.
Doctors say that Khan is “stable” but there are bullet fragments in his legs. Dr Faisal Sultan, who was the former PM’s assistant on health, has said that there is also a chip in the PTI chairman’s tibia shin bone due to the attack. He said that “according to X-rays and scans, there are fragments of bullets in his legs and there’s a chip in his tibia shin bone”.
The failed assassination attempt has vociferously stepped-up demand for an immediate poll, the key demand of the second Long March of Khan and his supporters that had started in Lahore and was to culminate in capital Islamabad.
Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has asserted that if the government wanted political stability in the country, it should step down and announce snap polls.
There is no let-up in the pressure on the establishment to relent to Khan’s demand. The Insaf Students Federation, the student wing of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in a tweet quoting Imran Khan, has said that PTI’s long march towards Islamabad will resume from 11am tomorrow (Friday).
Mystery has deepened as to whether Khan was targeted by lone shooter or multiple shooters. PTI leader Ali Haider Zaidi alleged that there was not just “one shooter” targeting the party chairman.
Another video of another PTI insider also claims that there was more than one shooter involved in the assassination attempt.
Meanwhile, PTI supporters are protesting outside the residence of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in Rawalpindi against the assassination attempt on party chief Imran Khan.
The demonstrators were also chanting slogans against the incumbent government.
