Bangladesh to go in for another round of nationwide lockdown to contain spread of Covid cases

Bangladesh has announced imposition of a strict lockdown from July 1 to contain the spread of Covid 19 infections. A limited scale lockdown, however, will be in place from Monday. Public transport will also be suspended from Monday, according to a report by Dhaka Tribune.

“A strict lockdown will be enforced for seven days starting from Monday. It might be extended, depending on the [Covid-19] situation,” Dhaka Tribune quoted State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain as saying.

The newspaper said Hossain also said that no one will be allowed to move out of their homes without emergency reasons. The army would be called in to assist the police and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troopers to enforce the ‘strict lockdown’ it said.

The Sheikh Hasina administration has also decided to keep all government and private offices closed during the lockdown. Only a few bank branches and offices of the National Board of Revenue would operate until June 30 for the national budget.

The number of Covid-19 cases has been rising in the South Asian country. The government had earlier put in place a nationwide lockdown from April 5 to contain the spread.

Later, a stricter set of restrictions on public movement and gathering were extended several times, including the latest one till July 15, Dhaka Tribune said.

This is set to impact the economy and economic recovery could take longer.
