Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
An investigation has been launched by Bangladesh authorities after a Kali temple in Dautiya village in Jhenaidah district was vandalised. Police are on the hunt for the vandals who allegedly desecrated the idol of a deity at a Hindu temple which stood as a place of worship for Hindus since the colonial era, BDNews 24 said in a report. The idol of the goddess at the temple was broken and thrown outside.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly underlined the need to uphold the country’s secular principles.
During the start of the Durga Puja Hasina in her message to the entire country said that the festival is not just confined to the Hindu community but signifies the destruction of evil forces. She said “it is now a universal festival”.
“Destruction of evil forces and worship of truth and beauty are the main motives of Sharadiya Durgotsob. On the occasion of Durga Puja, I wish peace, welfare and prosperity to all citizens, including Hindus,” she said. Hindus, comprise 10 per cent of Bangladesh’s population.
Despite coming down heavily on the extremist forces, including the Hefazat-e-Islam, Hasina continues to face challenges from radical elements in the country.
Last year, the Durga Puja festival was marred by violence leaving at least seven people dead.
“Since a long time, radical elements have been part of the society, which otherwise has been driven by its culture where both Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet have been prevalent. These radical forces have been playing a part from time to time,” Anil Trigunayat, former diplomat told India Narrative earlier.
