Bangladesh PM Hasina calls for co-ordinated global and regional action to fight Covid 19

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said that the developed world and the development partners' must join hands to ensure quick recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the 77th session of the UN-ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific that was held virtually, Hasina placed a four-point proposal for co-ordinated recovery. The theme of the session is "Building back better from crises through regional cooperation in Asia and the Pacific."

As part of her first proposal, Hasina said, "The developed world, development partners and international financial institutions (IFIs) should come forward in attaining quick recovery from the Covid pandemic."

According to Dhaka Tribune, Hasina’s second proposal focused on the development approach which should be inclusive, resilient and environment friendly. In her third and fourth proposals she said that the Asia-Pacific region should take efficient policies and strategies for a strengthened, universal public health system while establishing “seamless connectivity in the areas of trade, transport, energy and ICT, science and technology."

"We urge the international community to remain focused on this issue for a viable solution through sustainable repatriation," Dhaka Tribune quoted her as saying.

The Prime Minister also underlined the need to strengthen regional cooperation which would boost shared prosperity.

"We are engaged in Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal), BCIM-EC (Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar Economic Corridor) and Trilateral Highway initiatives," she said.
