Bangladesh pilot, admitted at Nagpur hospital after cardiac arrest, dies

Captain Nawshad Quaiyum, a pilot with Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, who was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Kingsway Hospitals in Nagpur, has passed away.

Quaiyum, while flying a Boeing with 126 passengers from Muscat to Dhaka, had to make an emergency landing in Nagpur after suffering a “massive” heart attack mid-air.

When the flight was near Raipur, the crew onboard contacted the Kolkata ATC seeking permission for an emergency landing. It was advised to land at Nagpur which was the nearest airport. The plane later left for Dhaka with all the passengers.

On landing, the pilot was immediately rushed to Kingsway Hospitals in Nagpur.

However, on Sunday, the doctors treating Quaiyum said that he was clinically dead.

“With the consent of his family, Captain Nawshad's ventilation was opened at 11am on Monday and he was pronounced dead,” a Dhaka Tribune report said, adding that all necessary arrangements are now being made to take his body back to Dhaka.

After suspending all flights amid a severe Covid 19 wave, Biman Bangladesh resumed services with India just a few days ago.
