Anti-Modi radical leader caught with woman at resort in Bangladesh

The leader of the radical outfit of Bangladesh Hefazat-e-Islam was detained on Sunday morning along with a woman at a resort in Sonargaon of Narayanganj. The group and its leaders are behind the violent protests across the country against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh last month. Modi was in Bangladesh on March 26 to 27 to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the country's independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, the Home Minister of Bangladesh Asaduzzman Khan Kamal on Sunday said that the woman who was with Hefazat Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque in a Sonargaon resort is not his wife. The Home Minister said that Mamunul was staying at a resort in Sonargaon upazila with a woman. "She is not his wife, I will let you know more information after knowing.”

Though Mamul told the media that the woman was his second wife but according to the police there are discrepancies while Mamunul introduced his wife as Amina Tayeeba, but the woman identified herself as Jannat-ara Jhorna when she was asked separately.

In case of paternal residence, the woman said she is from Faridpur, while Mamunul claimed her to be from Khulna. The Hefazat leader also failed to show any document that can prove the authenticity of their marriage. He claimed that they got married verbally and had no papers.

Later, supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam snatched their leader Mawlana Mamunul Haque away, soon after he was detained along with a woman at an resort in Sonargaon of Narayanganj.

The Minister said that he does not know why the attack was carried out on the resort by the Hefazat men after broadcasting the incident in the television channels.

"There were some foreigners in the resort, police and BGB men rescued them," he said.

When asked about the violence by the Hefazat mayhem in different areas of the country recently, the Home Minister said that definitely there is an objective behind these, "We are taking steps as per law, no one will be spared.”

Police took them under custody for interrogation though Mamunul claimed the woman to be his second wife.

A video clip of his detention went viral and created a huge buzz on social media platforms.

Mamunul Haque has long been under the spotlight for his controversial statements on sculptures and statues. In November, Mamunul demanded an immediate halt to the process of installing a sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dholair Par area in the capital. According to the Bangladesh government, he is the man behind the desecration of the under-construction statue of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has sought the details of bank accounts of 54 people including Hefazat’s ameer Junaid Babunagari, secretary general Nur Hossain Kasemi, secretary general of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Mamunul Haque.

Earlier India hoped that Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina’s government will investigate the protests led by the radical outfit Hefazat-e-Islam against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the neighbouring country.
