With a double suicide attack on Kabul airport, in which at least 13 people have been killed and dozens wounded the Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) may have just announced that it cannot be excluded from Afghanistan’s changing political equations, marked by the Taliban’s return to power.

Reuters quoting a source familiar with U.S. congressional briefings said U.S. officials strongly believe that the Afghan affiliate of Islamic State, known as Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), after an old name for the region, was responsible for the suicide attack.

The Associated Press also quoted a US official as saying that the complex attack is “definitely believed” to have been carried out by ISIS.

Reuters report is saying that five U.S. military personnel may have been hurt, including at least one seriously. Other reports say that four US marines have been killed.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the attack, saying that his group “strongly condemns the attack on civilians at Kabul airport, which took place in an area where US forces are responsible for security.”

A CNN report had earlier said that US officials are concerned about "a very specific threat stream" from ISIS-K targeting crowds outside Kabul airport.

US President, Joe Biden also said at the White House that, “Every day we’re on the ground is another day that we know ISIS-K is seeking to target the airport and attack both us and allied forces and innocent civilians.”
