After the Supreme Court verdict jubilant opposition seizes initiative to form new government in Pakistan

A day after the restoration of the Pakistan National Assembly, the parties of united opposition have got into a hurdle to finalise the formation of the new government in the country after ousting Imran Khan in the no-confidence vote scheduled to be held on Saturday morning as ordered by the country’s Supreme Court on Thursday.

According to Pakistani media, the united opposition has chalked out a detailed plan for the formation of a new government as well as the election of the new prime minister.

After the vote of confidence where Imran Khan is certain to lose, the opposition will make the claim and after proving the majority on the floor of the house, the new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be sworn in. The opposition claims they have more than 200 members, many more than the 172 required to unseat Khan.

“The new government will be constituted in the form of a national government in which all opposition parties will be given proportional representation,” Express Tribune quoted the opposition source as saying.

“This will not be a caretaker or interim government as the assembly is not dissolved. The tenure of the present assembly is till August 23, 2022. Once the Election Commission of Pakistan is ready, the new government will be holding the election.

“The Election Commission told the Supreme Court that it needs 6-8 months for the preparations for elections. We will announce elections after getting a signal from the commission. But before that we have to provide relief to the people and damage control that was done by Imran Khan Niazi,” said t Shehbaz Sharif in a joint press conference on late Thursday night .

In the press conference, Shehbaz sharif said that among the priorities of the new possible government is the formulation of economic policy to control inflation and stop the devaluation of the currency.

“The new government will also review the foreign policy with the aim to establish relations with all countries on equal footing while focusing on peace and not war,” he said. Sources told Express Tribune that the new government will take legal action to close the cases filed against opposition leaders on the basis of victimisation.

One of the most important things that the new government will be doing is to make a safe comeback of the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who was hounded out of the country by Imran Khan’s vengeful National Accountability Bureau (NAB). In 2018, The accountability court, in corruption cases filed by the NAB, sentenced the ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif for 10 years and his daughter Maryam Sharif was sentenced for 7 years jail terms. They both appealed against their sentences which are pending in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

According to the opposition, Imran Khan has been using NAB as a tool to settle scores against his political rivals. The opposition leaders have already said that there is no need for multiple agencies, when one FIA is already there.

Nawaz Sharif has been living in London in self exile and eagerly waiting for his return.

“I would like to congratulate the entire Pakistani nation. Today we have got rid of a person who destroyed Pakistan economically and left Pakistan impoverished. Thank God that he has got rid of him,” said Nawaz Sharif on Thursday after hearing the SC verdict.

Meanwhile, the SC verdict has also restored Imran Khan as the Prime Minister but only for a day as he has to face the no-confidence motion pending against him on Thursday.

Calling the verdict “unfortunate”, Khan tweeted that “I have convened a meeting of the federal cabinet and my parliamentary party tomorrow while I will be addressing the nation in the evening on Friday. My message to the nation is that I have always fought for Pakistan and will continue to fight till the last ball.”

Earlier Khan had threatened that if he was forced to resign, he would be more dangerous to his rivals.
