Russia has activated its military base in Tajikistan against advancing Taliban forces on its southern border and has senr a loud, clear message that it would rigorously guard its borders against forces of Islamic extremism. The drills are being held under the framework of the CSTO, a Moscow led collective security alliance. Although the drill is being set up to combat external aggression, the framework also fights terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, and transnational crime. This comes under the shadow of Taliban's increasing stronghold of Afghanistan.
