India marks the 47th anniversary of the country&#39;s first nuclear test which took place in barren deserts of Pokhran, Rajasthan, announcing India as a nuclear power. Codenamed &#39;Smiling Buddha&#39;, the test took place on May 18, 1974. Raja Ramanna, then director of India&rsquo;s premier nuclear research institute Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) conveyed the message &ldquo;The Buddha has finally smiled&rdquo; to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
