Indo-Pakistan War 1971: Remembering General Sam Manekshaw, Architect Of India’s Victory Over Pakistan

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 was sparked by the Bangladesh Liberation war. In April, India decided to assist in the Bangladeshi liberation war. During a cabinet meeting in April of 1971, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Sam Manekshaw, India's Army Chief at the time, on India’s preparedness for a War. Manekshaw is known to bluntly reply saying Indian Army wasn’t ready for war in April and that his job was to fight to win. He asked for a few months’ time. Gandhi said yes to the request to her credit and India indeed historically won the war in just 13 days under Manekshaw's steering. Manekshaw's winning strategy was executed by the Eastern Command under Lt. Gen.Jagjit Singh Aurora.</p>
