An enduring mystery of how Chinese leadership escaped Covid

This is going to go down as one of the world’s most enduring mysteries. At a time when leaders and top politicians are falling prey to the coronavirus in every nook and corner of the world, Chinese leaders have successfully evaded the runaway virus.

Not that we want the leaders of China or even the visionaries of the Chinese Communist Party to get ill with their own infection, it is just that persistent nagging question—how come the Chinese leadership has staved off Covid—which keeps hammering the mind with amazing regularity. We wish nobody ill at a time when this blob-like virus has rained death and destruction upon every single human being on earth, and some cats too.

An answer to how China's leaders have managed to keep the virus at bay will be a billion dollar solution. And, herein lies a miracle for the salvation of humanity. For, if this mystery is solved it will pull the world out of one of its bleakest periods and save the soul of humanity.

In asking our innocent question, we will not follow the path the Chinese denizens have taken—find satisfaction, and even happiness, in the fact that US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania had tested positive for the deadly virus. In tens of thousands, the Chinese social media users, not in sporadic isolated posts, have openly rejoiced in Trump getting infected and some have been expressing openly that he dies of the virus. Maybe the Chinese social media community wishes its maleficence on Trump out of a vicarious pleasure—his death happens due to a virus that seems to be made in China.

Some Chinese netizens went to the extent of thanking Trump for giving China a “National Day Gift.” This Chinese National Day, which falls on October 1, saw considerable muscular and malevolent activity by the communist nation—the police fired on demonstrators in Hong Kong, the soldiers threatened war on the Indian border and the State-owned media threatened an attack on Taiwan, which also celebrates its National Day on October 10.

Maybe these people can be ignored or better, be forgiven. But what does one think of the State-owned Chinese media, which was quick to jump in on Trump. Editor-in-chief Hu Xijin of the Chinese propaganda paper, Global Times, said: "President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19. The news shows the severity of the US’ pandemic situation. It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his reelection."

Besides Trump and Melania, the other big ones to fall prey have been UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the famed British royalty. Prince Charles showed mild symptoms. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle Bolsonaro were another giant prey to the infection. These three powerful democratic leaders had initially scoffed at the infection.

The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, and Prince Albert II of the tiny kingdom of Monaco also tested positive with the virus. Not to forget the first lady of Canada who was one of the initial ones to be caught by the infection. The virus has ravaged large parts of South America, even threatening ancient tribes living deep inside forests.

In South Asia too, the coronavirus has been unforgiving. The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, had to be admitted to the military hospital in Rawalpindi. His colleague, Minister for IT & Telecommunications, Syed Aminul Haq too had the infection. Nepal minister for Tourism Yogesh Bhattarai also contacted the virus. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, the Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan are the important leaders struck by the virus.

The novel coronavirus has struck every country on earth and bulldozed everyone into equivalence—rich and poor, haves and have-nots, migrants and citizens, the elite and also those barely able to write their name. The only exception remains the Chinese leadership.

So, besides that one question—the origin of the virus, which many have been asking since the beginning of this year, another is whether the Chinese have a cure. Is the Chinese leadership sitting on information which only it is in possession of?

With every piece of news that rolls in about a leader becoming a victim to coronavirus somewhere in the world, people inadvertently look towards China in both anger and insinuation. Despite global opprobrium, the communist country remains unfazed. Irrespective of what the world says and thinks, the mighty communist machine marches on with unabashed propaganda about its benevolence and misinformation on the genesis of the virus even as it holds many a Covid-19 secret close to its chest..
