Twitter to restart its verification program

Who doesn't want to acquire a blue tick on his or her Twitter account? And now there is good news for the Twitteratti! Twitter will be restarting its blue tick verification program from 2021.

Under the Twitter verification program, the user gets the coveted blue tick on the profile which helps users the authenticity of the account as genuine, real or one of public interest .

We're planning to relaunch verification in 2021, but first we want to hear from you.

Help us shape our approach to verification on Twitter by letting us know what you think. Take a look at our draft policy and submit your #VerificationFeedback here: https://t.co/0vmrpVtXGJ

In a blog, the social media giant said that three years ago they had put a brake on the public verification program after getting “arbitrary” and “confusing” feedback from their users.

“Today, we’re sharing the start of our plans to revamp how people can identify themselves on Twitter, starting with verification and asking the public to share feedback on a draft of our new verification policy,” Twitter wrote.

Who will be verified?

As of now, only six accounts of people from government, companies and brands and non- profit organizations, news industry, arena of entertainment, sports could be verified. Besides, activists, organizers, and other Influential Individuals– influencers as they are called were eligible for the coveted badge.

“To receive the blue badge, your account must be notable and active,” Twitter said in the draft of its new policy.

What should you follow to get the blue tag?

Complete your detailed profile with name, a short bio-data along with banner images. Most importantly you should be active on this social media platform. The twitter user should have logged into her account at least once in six months. The account must also have a confirmed email address or phone number.

The usual caveats apply as well. The user seeking the blue badge must be respectful of the twitter rules. If the user's tweets have been suspended for violation of Twitter rules in six months, there is no hope of getting the badge of honor.

A word of caution from Twitter. Accounts that remained inactive or had incomplete profiles could even lose the badge, once earned.

“We recognize that there are many verified accounts on Twitter who should not be. We plan to start by automatically removing badges from accounts that are inactive or have incomplete profiles to help streamline our work and to expand this to include additional types of accounts over the course of 2021.”.
