American Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will arrive today in India for a three-day visit to engage with the Indian government over the climate issue.

According to the US state department, Kerry will meet with Indian leaders as well as the private sector "to discuss efforts to raise global climate ambition and speed India’s clean energy transition".

India and the US will focus on financing of renewable energy and green technologies. Kerry had earlier visited the country in April and met with Indian leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two nations will also launch the Climate Action and Finance Mobilization Dialogue (CAFMD)–one of the two main tracks of the US-India Agenda 2030 Partnership that President Biden and Prime Minister Modi had announced at the Leaders Summit on Climate in April 2021. US President Joe Biden had organised the online summit with 40 world leaders to put the global spotlight on climate change and poor environment.

Just a fortnight earlier, Kerry had visited Japan and China to hold talks on curbing emissions and reducing support for fossil fuels.

Kerry's visit comes ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to be held from October 31 to November 12, 2021, in Glasgow, the UK.

India has an ambitious target of producing 450 GW of renewable energy and is leading the International Solar Alliance along with France to promote clean energy. Due to focus on economic growth, India’s emissions are ranked at number four after China, the United States and the EU.
