A British gardener claims to have harvested 839 tomatoes from a single stem and has applied for recognition in the Guinness World Record book.

The 43-year-old gardner, Douglas Smith, a resident of Stanstead Abbotts in England on Sept 10 tweeted: "So today I went for a Guinness World record attempt for 'most tomatoes on a single truss / stem'. Today, we counted 839 tomatoes vs current WR of 488!! Awaiting verification from Guinness in due course." His tweet also carried his photograph along with the tomatoes.

The story was also published by the American news agency United Press International (UPI).

Smith’s harvest has turned out to be nearly twice the current world record of tomatoes harvested from a single stem set at 488 by Graham Tranter in 2010.

Smith said he was careful to follow Guinness' rules when growing and harvesting his tomatoes, and evidence from the attempt is being submitted to the record-keeping organization for official recognition.

In 2020, Douglas Smith had hit headlines for growing the world's largest tomato. The tomato weighed 3.1 KG and was 27.5 inches in circumference.
