Spain’s La Palma continues to reel under rogue volcanic eruption

With the volcano still spewing lava and molten rock high in the air in La Palma Island, the authorities in Spain Canary Islands advised the residents to lock down and ensure sealing their doors and windows with tape and wet towels. This is essentially not to allow the toxic gases coming out from the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

Lava coming down the volcano poured down a cliff into the sea on Wednesday (September 29) in the Playa Nueva area. The falling of hot lava in the sea sent big clouds of white steam and toxic gases billowing into the air. The continuous pouring saw red hot lava emerging about the Atlantic Ocean waterline.

The emergency services of the Islands has asked people staying in less than 3.5 kilometre from the area where the volcano has erupted to immediately leave for safer places. Although no has been reported injured so far.

Emergency services also recommended people "protect breathing tracts with a wet cloth covering mouth and nose".

The lava has been coming down Cumbre Vieja's western flank toward the sea since September 19, destroying in its wake nearly 600 houses and banana plantations in La Palma, which neighbours Tenerife in the Canary Islands archipelago off the North African coast.

So people in thousands of people have been evacuated and three coastal villages locked down on Monday in anticipation of the lava reaching the sea.

La Palma has been classified as a disaster by Spanish authorities on Tuesday. This move will allow financial support for the island.
