Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar is in news for all the good reasons as the premises heralded birth of a number of yellow anaconda snakelets.

On Thursday for the very first time a yellow anaconda snakelet was born. For safety reasons, it was kept in a separate air-conditioned enclosure. The Zoo authorities took to Twitter and announced: "Anaconda of Nandankanan has been given the 1st offspring in the history of the zoo today. The mother and other females are under observation and the newborn is kept in a controlled environment for proper temperature and humidity."

With the addition of the newborn the total number of yellow anacondas rose to six but the authorities were expecting more snakelets.

A Zoo official informed India Narrative that yesterday the mother anaconda gave birth to seven more snakelets followed by one more, thanks to the effort of the veterinarians of the Park and the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology. Of these one was still born.

Later, she gave birth to a single snakelet thus making the total as nine.

Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Swain told India Narrative that all the nine were alive.

All the snakelets have been kept in individual boxes in a control environment for temperature and humidity. The mother anaconda is under observation.

Dr. Indramani Nath HOD, Surgery, and Dr. Vijay Sahoo Prof of Gynaecology assisted the vets in delivering the snakelets.

The Zoo in November 2019 had bought eight yellow anacondas from the crocodile bank in Chennai but three of them died due to infection.

The yellow anaconda is a boa species which is endemic to southern South America. Described as one of the largest snakes in the world it is smaller than its close relative the green anaconda. Though non-venomous it kills its prey by constriction.
