India to focus daylight harvesting to reduce electricity consumption

<strong>With India having put in place the world’s largest expansion plan in renewable energy sector, the Government is taking steps in that direction. One of them is the decision of the Ministry of Science and Technology to promote a unique start-up in latest Daylight Harvest Technology.</strong></p>
<p>
Daylighting is a term used for bringing of natural sunlight into buildings and rooms for illumination thereby reducing electrical lighting energy consumption by 70 to 80 per and air-conditioning consumption.</p>

This was announced by the Union Minister of State, S&T, Dr Jitendra Singh who said this initiative will enable reduction of carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency of buildings. He was speaking on the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Skyshade Daylights Private Limited, the only start-up company in India for DHT in Hyderabad and the Technology Development Board.</p>

Singh highlighted that the solar energy spectrum has 45 per cent energy as visible light and this can be used to harvest building illumination for about nine to eleven hours a day. He pointed out that the technology used is completely indigenous, economically viable and easy to deploy and needs minimal maintenance with longevity.</p>

Elaborating on this, TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak observed: <a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1802672" rel="nofollow">“Lighting is a fundamental</a> requirement of our daily life. Daylight is available universally and it is a very clean and cost-efficient source of energy. Meeting our energy requirement during the day by using daylight harvesting technology will contribute immensely to meet one of the commitments of the five nectars of ‘Panchamrit’ — to make India as Net Zero emission country by 2070.”</p>

Working in this field since 2014, Skyshade Daylights done daylighting for several Government bodies and PSUs like Telangana Secretariat, PMO office South block, NTPC, Amazon, Tata Motors Hero Motors, and religious institutions like Yadadri Temple, Sri RanganathaSwamy Temple, Shiva Temple, Bohra Masjid etc. They plan to daylight the Ayodhya Temple.</p>
